From prefab to fab!
29 April 2006

Design of the visual identity for the Young Vic theatre.

We won a pitch to design the identity for the newly-rebuilt Young Vic theatre.

Having been established in 1970, as a prefab tacked on to a former butcher’s shop on The Cut near Waterloo, the building was supposed to be replaced within a matter of years, but stood until 2005 when it more or less fell down.

Funds were raised, with help from actors who forged their reputations there such as Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes, and 2006 saw the unveiling of the new theatre.

The identity takes its cue from the architectural concept and aesthetic. The auditorium is a stripped, highly flexible space allowing Directors a free-reign, and the aesthetic throughout is confidently utilitarian ply-wood and breeze block, hence the functional, stencil look and sparse, bold colours.

There are four versions of the stencilled logo, used at random.
