to know about Moondog

Packaging for Joanna MacGregor’s Moondog tribute, Sidewalk Dances.

When Joanna asked me to design a sleeve for this release, I wasn’t familiar with Moondog; what a bloke.

Dressed like a viking, blind, more or less a vagrant, he played his own compositions, on his own hand-built instruments, on the same New York street corner, from the late 1940s until 1974. His compositions were a mix of Native American, classical and jazz styles.

He’s now recognised as a kind of warped genius, shame no-one told him before he died in 1999.

Joanna MacGregor assembled a bunch of well-regarded jazz musicians, including Andy Sheppard and Seb Rochford, to record an album of Moondog compositions — on conventional instruments.
